THE FALL TOURNAMENT

Tejal had instructed the four friends to keep quiet about MacRallen's news. Nobody else should know that war was raging again on the mainland. Things were tense enough at the university. As for MacRallen, all Tejal told the boys was that he was getting better.

To keep the peace at laburg, Tejal decided that the fall tournament should go ahead.

It was Friday, and all the fraternities were gearing up for the big day tomorrow. The official players had today off. This gave them time to focus on the tournament, which was to take place over the weekend.

The boys had class in the morning. Bryn had Math, and in the afternoon, he had his lesson with Tejal. Both of which proved to be difficult. The other three had the afternoon off. Later that night, they gathered in the common room alone to discuss the weekend. Bryn nodded off once or twice and had to apologize. But exhaustion had its advantages: he didn't have the energy to get anxious about the tournament.

Morlâ put another log on the fire. Outside, it was freezing, and the cold was coming up through the tower's old stone floors. Filixx, Bryn, and Ûlyėr slumped in their chairs and listened more or less to what their captain was saying. "So, before each match, the Five Wise Ones will declare that none of them can compete. Then they'll demand somebody defend their honor and appoint one of us. I will, of course, decide who is going against whom for each match. Gerald has promised he will get the match schedule for us. This will help me plan our strategy."

"Great, we can go to bed now. Being well-rested tomorrow is also important." Filixx got up to leave.

"Let's go over the rules once more." Morlâ motioned for him to sit. "Because tomorrow will be a bit more complicated than last semester."

Filixx pushed himself back into his chair. He knew Morlâ was repeating the rules for his own reassurance as much as anything.

"Tomorrow we play four matches, and we want to win all four. That way we get the maximum number of points and don't have to rely on slip-ups from the other teams to get us to the final. Each one of us will play since we don't have a fifth man. The Wise Ones made it very clear, they will not play, no matter what." Morlâ's gaze lingered briefly on Bryn. "As always, each of us may only be engaged once on the first day. Every victory earns us two points. The top two in the ranking will compete against each other in the finals on Sunday for the University Cup. And remember, it's always about defending our star or touching the opponent's. In total, you must defend or capture the Harel Star at least twice in no more than three rounds. Attack and defense will reverse each round. The third round is open and played only if there's a tie after the first two. That's it. You know it, I know it.
